To the editor:

I read with great interest Bernard Whalen's op-ed (“For Adams’ challengers, a tough ask,” The Chief, Aug. 9). In 1989, incumbent Mayor Edward I. Koch sought a fourth term in City Hall, but lost the Democratic Party primary nomination to then-Manhattan Borough President David N. Dinkins in September of 1989. Dinkins subsequently defeated Republican-Liberal candidate Rudy Giuliani in the November general election.

So, for the record, the City has had five incumbents who were not successful in seeking re-election since the 1898 consolidation. Overall, a good editorial.
