The ever-slippery slope

To the Editor:

For roughly the first 200 years of our country’s existence, the courts (rightly) interpreted the second Amendment in the context of “a well-regulated militia.” Sometime during the 1980’s “Reagan revolution,” conservatives saw the opportunity for galvanizing votes, money and power by re-interpreting the Second Amendment as an individual’s right of self-protection, primarily within their homes. The rationale used was known as the “castle doctrine,” in which each person is the king or queen of their domain.
