I worked at the NYC Department of Transportation for nearly 30 years. NYCDOT has a very straightforward mission — to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods within the city. In order to carry out this mission, the agency operates traffic signals, regulates curb space and assigns usage of the public “right-of-way” or the area between building lines.
