To the editor:
When campaigning, Mayor Eric Adams said that his predecessor's proposal to replace city employees' Medicare with a private Medicare Advantage program sounded like "bait and switch."
But he's now still spending taxpayers' money on court appeals to overturn judges' decisions to stop this bait and switch. This is all to save $600 million a year in a $110 billion city budget.
So it's no surprise that he's going back on his word to institute pay parity with firefighters to FDNY EMS workers.
Offering raises that align with the percentages given to civilian workers is obviously not adequate for uniformed workers. Also, 3-percent raises are never adequate to rectify the compensation of underpaid employees.
Then there's the usual hogwash from a City Hall spokesperson about being fair to both city workers and taxpayers. When did they become two different entities? I don't remember city workers ever being exempt from paying taxes.
The City Council refusing to enforce a law passed in 2001 to give EMS workers parity is no surprise. When politicians keep a promise to workers, that's a surprise.
I'm hoping Lou Christie is getting plenty of songwriting royalties from all the politicians who sing to workers "Two Faces Have I."

NYC Medicare Retirees have been sold out by Unions/City who stole their promised earned healthcare for small low raises.Besides the fact the contact is illegal, immoral,& anti-union.The worst labor contract in history!
EMS beware & good luck don't get sold out by your Union/City.
