An 18-year-old state worker was killed Saturday by a falling tree while battling the Jennings Creek forest fire in Orange County, authorities said.
Dariel Vasquez was assisting with fire line construction, according to Jeremy Oldroyd, a Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Ranger. Vasquez had joined the state Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation Department in May and was also part of a state wildland fire crew.
