To the editor:
Eric Adams has character flaws that have negatively impacted his performance as mayor.: his use of race to buttress his positions, and his ethically challenged behavior as well as the ethically challenged behavior of people he has appointed to high positions in his administration.
On a radio broadcast he said, “I’m your Mayor, Eric Adams…. David Dinkins Two, I like to say.” His narrative is that racial animosity prevented Dinkins from winning a second term. Consequently, voters should reject “unnamed forces” and elect him, as the second Black mayor, to the second term denied to Dinkins because of race.
What does Dinkins’ loss in the 1993 campaign in which race played a factor have to do with Adams’ upcoming 2025 election? Unlike Adams, Dinkins was a thoughtful, dignified politician who had credibility and worked to create a consensus. He did not hire top aides who were investigated by the FBI and the Office of the U.S. Attorney.
As Doug Muzzio, a retired political science professor and expert in New York City politics, recently said, “There is a stench of corruption around the Mayor.”
