To the Editor: Congratulations, Frank Serpico, for finally getting the Medal of Honor from the NYPD, an honor that he should have received long ago. Thank you, Mayor Eric Adams, for making this happen.
Having started my police career in 1973, soon after the completion of the work of the Knapp Commission with Frank Serpico as the critical witness about police corruption, I know that he made it possible for police officers to do the job honestly, fairly and compassionately. I say "possible" because Serpico's courageous testimony and the important work of the Knapp Commission did not make it easy to be an honest cop in all police precincts.
