Morality’s genealogy

Posted

To the editor:

Immanuel Kant, one of the Enlightenment’s preeminent philosophers, wrote that “Morality is not the doctrine of how we may make ourselves happy, but how we may make ourselves worthy of happiness.”

More recently, the American author Frank Herbert, who penned the “Dune” saga, wrote that “respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality.”

If we believe Kant and Herbert are right, then it is clear that Donald Trump is one of the most immoral and uncompassionate humans on the face of the earth. It’s frightening because he is probably the most powerful leader in the world. How could such a vile miscreant be elected president?

Are most American voters as evil as he is? Are they really as racist, xenophobic and misogynistic as Trump? I believe many if not most Americans are willingly and freely in the Trump cult of evil, and only serious financial losses can force them to turn away from Trump. They won’t be better people; they will just turn away from Trump.

If you genuinely believe that Donald Trump’s actions and statements reflect immorality and a lack of compassion, then it is imperative that you refrain from voting for him. If you are uncertain whether American voters share his perspective, it is evident that they do; he garnered an overwhelming majority of their votes.

Furthermore, Immanuel Kant famously stated, “Act in such a way that the maxim of your action could become a universal law.”
