Monstrosity averted

To the editor:

In response to “Morality’s genealogy” (Letters, The Chief, March 28): Thomas Hobbes, the 17th century English political philosopher, in his influential book “Leviathan” wrote that life shorn of society would be "solitary, poor, mean, nasty, brutish and short."

It appears that leading into the November elections, the U.S. electorate felt the country was heading into a similarly dystopian nightmare. I believe the people of the United States voted for change. Most are not racist, xenophobic and misogynistic.

Do I think that some people have pernicious non-values? Yes, I do. But one should be careful to not lump all Trump supporters into the same basket. The Trump cult of evil? C'mon. The Democratic party has been peculating from the people for far too long. My Democratic friends (I have a few) voted for Trump based on the perfidiousness of their party. They wanted more stability and less vagary. The vicissitudes of the people in both parties and independents spoke on Nov. 5.

A lot of individuals feel a renaissance occurred that day.

It’s refreshing to read a letter that avoids the usual vitriol and ridicule directed at the November 5th election and its supporters. However, I was surprised to learn that your Democratic friends voted for Trump solely because they perceived their party to be duplicitous. It’s challenging to write an objective letter. Well done.
