Mayor, Chancellor Shake Up School Admissions, But is It Enough?

Mayor de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza Dec. 18 announced reforms to the admissions process for city public middle- and high schools aimed at increasing diversity, but one education expert cast doubt that the plans would bring meaningful changes.

Middle schools will eliminate the use of academic screenings for one year, including auditions for music, dance and other performing-arts programs. About 40 percent of middle schools use academic records to determine which students will be admitted. Admissions will be decided through a lottery-based system for schools that have more applicants than open seats.
