To the editor:
In the New York City mayoral race, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Zohran Mamdani amidst controversy surrounding “Israel’s right to exist.”
Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist assemblyman from Queens, has faced criticism for his stance on Israel. During a debate, he supported Israel’s right to exist as an “equal state,” but failed to specify its Jewish identity. This stance has drawn criticism from political figures and Jewish leaders, including Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic primary frontrunner, and Joseph Potasnik of the New York Board of Rabbis.
Despite the controversy, Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Mamdani, commending his coalition-building abilities. Mamdani’s support for the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement and his stance on Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state have been contentious issues throughout his political career.
Cuomo’s unwavering support for Israel serves as a rallying cry for Jewish communities to unite. Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy poses a significant threat to the Jewish community. Under Cuomo’s leadership, hate crimes on college campuses and other public spaces will be effectively curtailed.
