Ironworkers locals holding recruitment for Long Island and NYC regions

Posted

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Ironworkers, Local Union #40 & #361, is conducting recruitment through June 9 for 100 ironworker (outside) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced.

The 100 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for the Long Island and New York City regions.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. They also must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Proof will be required after the offer of employment.

Apprenticeship applicants must be physically able to perform the work of an ironworker (outside), which will be determined by physical test. Applicants must show they can climb up a 35-foot column in less than 40 seconds and safely climb back down; climb a ladder 20 feet up to a 5.5-inch-wide beam and walk on top of that beam for 20 feet, turn around and return to the ladder.

They will also have to show they can climb four feet down the ladder onto a platform and pull up a bucket that weighs 75 pounds, lower the bucket back to the ground, pull it up and again lower it to the ground and then climb back down the ladder. They must complete that task in less than three and a half minutes.

Applicants will also have to show they can raise and lower 2,000 pounds of steel 40 inches into the air with a chain fall in less than two minutes and 15 seconds.

They also must show they can carry a 45-pound tool up and down a staircase, three times, within one minute and 30 seconds.

They must also take and pass the ironworkers’ written aptitude test, must be able to follow written directions and must submit to a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

To apply

Applications must be obtained and submitted online at www.nycironworkers.org

A $25 testing fee and a valid form of identification will be required at the time of testing payable by money order only to Ironworkers LU #40 & #361. Applicants can request feed waivers, which will be approved upon demonstrating verifiable proof of financial need.

After paying the application fee, applicants will receive a receipt with an appointment date for the written exam at the Local Union’s school at 35-23 36th St., in Astoria, Queens.

For further information, applicants should contact JATC for Ironworkers, Local Union #40 & #361 at (718) 433-4195. Additional job search assistance can be obtained at local New York State Department of Labor Career Centers (see: dol.ny.gov/career-centers).

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the labor commissioner.

Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
