To the editor:
Plenty of attention has been given lately to the inhumane denial of health care coverage by private insurance companies. But according to a recent page 1 story in The Chief, self-insurer New York City is worse (“NYC delays the most workers’ comp claims in the state,” The Chief, Jan. 3). This did not change when Bill "Mr. Progressive" de Blasio was replaced by Eric Adams as New York City's CEO.
We are told that self-insurers fight harder because it's their own money. Really? Is this de Blasio’s or Adams' money?
We are told that delays are caused by understaffing of the city's law department. So this means bigger workloads for these attorneys. So they want to create even more work for themselves by wrongly fighting these claims?
Adams seems more willing to spend money wrongly fighting claims for health care. Just as he's willing to endlessly spend money on legal appeals in an attempt to force Medicare Advantage on city retirees.
The mayor is elected to serve all citizens. So it's about time we got one who doesn't simply behave like a typical corporate CEO.
