School Employees Local 372 of District Council 37, one of whose past presidents went to prison for embezzling millions of dollars from the local and the parent union, and another of whom did her best to stifle democracy in the union's election process, is under scrutiny again because of its election committee's trying to prevent a challenger to President Shaun Francois from having a slate box in its ongoing elections.
Challenger Paul Brathwaite was denied the box—which would allow union members looking to support him and his running mates to merely check it to vote for all of them rather than having to fill in more than two dozen boxes—because, he was told, he listed only 25 candidates for delegate, and 26 are necessary to comprise a full slate.
