To the Editor: As has been reported in the media, the 10 House Republicans who voted for impeachment are already facing a number of primary challengers, censures and other attacks from their hometown Republican Party organizations. This is a clear sign that the battle over Donald Trump will play a defining role in shaping the direction of the GOP during the next two years. Some of the Republicans who have condemned Trump's seditious actions are also facing death threats.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she so feared the death threats by the radical right domestic terrorists that she did not attend the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. In a number of states, police and the National Guard have to protect political leaders, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who are in the crosshairs of the white supremacists who stormed the Capitol looking to take hostages or kill Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence.
