Commissioner Dermot Shea and Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said the demonstration, which wound downtown from the main library on 42nd St., was largely peaceful and uneventful, but that once downtown it was infiltrated by firebrands intending to sow chaos. Several of those arrested, some known to police, were found to be carrying knives, hammers, flammable liquids and M-80 fireworks.
