A doorman at an Upper West Side building has been indicted for allegedly stealing more than $477,000 from a retired city public school teacher and her husband, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced.
Investigators said that Alfredo Mateo, 38, stole 26 checks from the retired teacher, who was a tenant at the same building where Mateo worked but was living in a nursing home under a court-ordered guardianship as an incapacitated person. Mateo is alleged to have deposited the first stolen check into his personal bank account on Sept. 2, 2022, one day after the teacher’s husband, who was still living at their Upper West Side apartment at 380 Riverside Drive, died.
