To the editor:
Former President Donald Trump's decisive victory, winning all seven battleground states, the Electoral College and the popular vote, is a blaring wake up call for Governor Hochul, State Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. The many Democrats, Republicans and independents supporting Trump didn't take kindly to being called "un-American" by Hochul.
Hating half the population is not an effective means of political persuasion. This language only helps Trump because it makes Democrats seem as unreasonable and divisive.
Bragg's indictment of Trump looked to many Americans like banana-republic lawfare against a political opponent while sabotaging Democratic arguments about democracy. James is the very face of lawfare as a prosecutor who ran on getting Trump on something, anything. This mindset has backfired royally.
New York is losing a major source of clout with the ouster of Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer. The state needs federal funding for transit and infrastructure work. The MTA (Money Taking Agency) will only secure ongoing funding when fiscally-sound and measurable results are seen. The MTA in 2023 paid over 700 workers overtime amounts of $100,000+ while the LIRR fails to have electrified trains to Greenport and Montauk. The agency’s administration needs a major realignment and must explain why crumbling and rusted bridges are not repaired.
Trump and his wasteful spending guru Elon Musk will demand accountability when distributing funding. If Hochul, James and Bragg don't make amends by ending the political lawfare and divisive rhetoric, all New Yorkers will suffer. It's time to put local needs above failing party politics. Let's have a win-win now. And why not?
