Staff at the City Council, wary of potential retaliatory layoffs early next year, are attempting to preempt their bosses by calling on Council members to not cut personnel at the beginning of a new term.
City Council staff unionized with the independent Association of Legislative Employees secured their first contract last year, which included much sought-after job security protections and pattern raises aligned with the rest of the public sector. But the contract also contains a clause that allows Council members to terminate staffers at the beginning of each new Council term under the guise of “reorganization.”
