Cop-Killers' Unearned Breaks

A troubling trend has continued with two paroles in the span of a month being granted: the first to a man who coordinated the assassination of a Parole Officer and another to an inmate who set up two Police Officers to be murdered.

State parole officials acting on a change in state rules that require them to explain cases in which they don't grant parole tied to a scoring system that deems inmates good risks for release, have ordered the release of Perry Bellamy, a key player in the murder of Parole Officer Brian Rooney in 1985, and Anthony Bottom, one of the men convicted in the ambush of Police Officers Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini in 1971.
