5-year agreement 'life-changing'

About 100 workers who clean Con Edison buildings represented by Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union have secured their first-ever union contract. The union reached a five-year agreement with three companies contracted by the investor-owned energy company to clean Con Ed’s Gramercy neighborhood headquarters, substations and customer service centers.

The five-year agreement with Nelson Services Systems, United Building Maintenance and Preferred Building Services includes an immediate $6.50 an hour wage bump. Over the course of the contract, wages will eventually be on par with those earned by 20,000 other cleaners represented by 32BJ across the city. The contract also provides health care benefits and retirement security and makes the workers eligible for the union’s legal fund and training classes.
