Horse-carriage drivers, backed by TWU Local 100, push back against possible citywide ban

Central Park Conservancy now supports Ryder’s Law

With new calls to ban the historic horse-carriage industry operating out of Central Park, drivers find themselves defending their practice against animal abuse accusations and legislation that could put them out of work. 

The Central Park Conservancy took a stance on the industry in a letter sent to city officials last month, with the organization’s president and CEO, Betsy Smith, citing recent instances of harm to public safety and “enormous damage” to the park’s roads. The statement marks a break from the Conservancy’s long-time neutrality on the trade since the nonprofit’s inception in 1980.
