To the Editor: After hearing Putin’s megalomaniacal and irrational speech, we can’t make the mistake of thinking that he is a rational leader or even a leader who fears death. If Putin could be sure of cementing his place in history as a great Russian leader, we should believe he would be willing to sacrifice his life and the lives of every Russian to achieve his goal.
Putin said that the consequences of any attempt by NATO nations to strike back at Russia would provoke a response “never seen in history” —obviously implying that he would use nuclear weapons.
