Calling for common sense

Posted

To the editor:

I was glad to read that Governor Kathy Hochul acted to have Bui Van Phu jailed for his knockout punch of total stranger Victor Cortez that has left him hospitalized and in a coma. But the fact that Van Phu was released in the first place shows the weakness of our "justice" system. If he had not been on lifetime parole for a previous offense, he could not have been arrested for a parole violation.

Our legal system does not give judges the option of fully considering the nature of a crime. Someone who punches a stranger from behind as hard as he can for no reason is treated no differently than someone who slaps someone during a heated argument.

This is just one area where common sense in our legal system is missing.
