An 11-Year Contract Itch For S.I. Ferry Captains

On Aug. 6, the Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis Craft Vessel departed the Eastern Shipbuilding Group's Port St. Joe, Fla. facility bound for New York, the first of three larger ferry boats that were technologically advanced and "will operate more safely in cold weather," according to the Maritime Executive, an industry publication.

The $103-million boat, which was designed to support evacuations and rescue efforts in the event of a 9/11-type catastrophe, was described in the article as "fully certified and passenger ready," and was scheduled to arrive in New York Aug. 18 and begin transporting passengers in the fall.
