To the editor:
So District Council 37, and at least one other union, is urging City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to run for mayor. Mayor Eric Adams continues to waste taxpayers' money appealing to the courts to allow him to force Medicare Advantage on city retirees.
Meanwhile, Speaker Adams has stymied all legislative attempts to guarantee that retirees will keep their current coverage. DC37 is led by Harry Garrido, who has threatened to deny support to any Council member who votes for such legislation. So it's no surprise that he would support the Council speaker.
Even if the mayor had not been indicted for corruption and was not inspiring President Donald Trump to rewrite The Rolling Stones' classic, "Under My Thumb," with special lyrics for him, he would still be someone who should be voted out of office.
Mayor Adams' continued effort to strip retirees of their current health coverage, his broken promise to raise EMS workers' salaries out of poverty by giving them pay parity with other uniformed services, and the continued randomness of violent crime under a mayor who emphasizes law and order are all reasons to vote him out of office.
But any candidate, including Speaker Adams, who is not good on all these issues, should not be considered either.
As for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, we should not forget that he used the threat of layoffs to get poverty-salaried state workers to accept a three-year wage freeze.
Finally, there's the first mayoral debate on Feb. 26. Why do the candidates consider Garrido acceptable as its moderator?
