A Bridge Too Frail

To the Editor: There's something humbling, vaguely ominous, even eerily metaphysical, about bridges.

Gephyrophobia is the medical term for an anxiety disorder characterized by fear of bridges. But there might be good reason for such apprehension. As the Coney Island-born philosopher-novelist Joseph Heller famously observed, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you."
