To the Editor: During the presidential debate Sept. 29, moderator Chris Wallace asked President Trump to condemn white supremacists and tell his supporters not to resort to civil unrest after the election. Trump refused to do both, except to instruct the Proud Boys, a far right neo-fascist group, to "stand back and stand by."
The Proud Boys wasted no time reveling in this shout-out. NBC News reported they were celebrating the President's words and responded to him in a private social-media posting, "standing down and standing by sir."
