To the Editor: Conflicts between the Medical Examiner, Health Department and law enforcement do not enhance the quality of death investigations and autopsies, determine the cause and manner of death, protect public health and safety, quell public unrest or bring about police reforms.
The Medical Examiner is part of the Health Department and regularly files post-mortem data with its vital-statistics bureau. The NYPD independently keeps its own records, which are made available to the public through the media, Mayor's Office, City Council, District Attorneys' offices and its own public-relations department.
