To the Editor: It's bad enough that on June 16 a 92-year-old retired schoolteacher got knocked to the ground for no reason at all. But why was her attacker, 31-year-old Rashid Brimmage, still free after 103 arrests? His record includes similar attacks and sex offenses.

Brimmage will finally be held, since bail was set at $50,000, which is $50,000 more than that homeless man has.

His lawyer, Henna Khan, points out that he was diagnosed at age 18 with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He walked himself to Lincoln Hospital hours before the incident to seek psychiatric care. So when police complain that they are constantly dealing with the mentally ill because judges repeatedly release them and our health-care system does not help them, they have a point.
