To the Editor: If anyone doubted that our nation is engaged in a civil war that is mostly based on the racism and white nationalism of President Donald Trump and his sycophants, one only has to consider the coded comments of Attorney General William Barr to a roomful of prosecutors and police officers (Washington Post, Dec. 4).
Barr compared the protests against excessive force by police officers in some American cities with the poor treatment of Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. Barr went much further with his coded racism and said, “If communities don’t give that support and respect (to police officers), they might find themselves without the police protection they need.”
