Editorial: FDNY Not a Boys Club

It sounded like something out of the bad old days of the Fire Department three decades ago, when women Firefighters were mistreated by colleagues using the excuse that they had been hired only because a Federal Judge allowed them to take a modified physical test that wasn’t given to male candidates.

Tracy Lewis told a City Council hearing last week that from the time she entered a firehouse in Brooklyn’s Canarsie section, she was subjected to harassment and ostracized by the men working there. She later found out, she testified, that prior to her arrival, an officer from Engine Co. 257 had pleaded with FDNY superiors not to send her there because “we’ll be the laughingstock of the battalion.”
