Stimulus Bill Remains Vital

As this newspaper went to press early on Oct. 9 because of Columbus Day, it was still uncertain whether common sense would prevail in Washington, D.C. and a stimulus bill that would provide needed relief for state and local governments might finally be approved.

President Trump over the previous week had shifted his stance three times: first calling for it to get done, then "ordering" congressional Republicans to put it aside to ensure the confirmation of his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, and then—after the financial markets tumbled in reaction—saying he was willing to do a stimulus that would merely send out $1,200 checks to Americans.
