Hazardous Even Before Virus

Among the more-disturbing aspects of the high death rate for Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers tied to the coronavirus is that of the first 83 victims, all but one of them were assigned to either the subway or bus divisions.
 
It's hard to fathom that the disparity could be so great between those under the jurisdiction of New York City Transit and those working for the commuter rail lines, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro North. The fact that a greater percentage of NYC Transit personnel are black and Latino at a time when those two groups have higher COVID-19 casualty rates can't explain why the swing would be so much greater than within the general population.
