Driven by sharp increases in murders and shootings, overall crime rose in New York City last month compared to a year earlier, police said.
The 34 killings in March were 11 more than occurred in March 2020, and the 99 shootings were 43 more, according to NYPD statistics. The violence capped a month when all so-called index crimes except robberies and burglaries climbed, a rare occurrence lately, despite the steady climb in violent crime underway citywide for months now.
