A coalition of three dozen elected officials from across the country, headed by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, have called on the U.S. Department of Justice to determine whether government responses to the coronavirus pandemic violated civil rights, contributing to the disproportionately high rates of COVID-19 in black and Latino communities.
“We’re asking the Department of Justice to step in and do an investigation on the response to coronavirus across this country. We cannot ignore the fact that black and brown people have borne the brunt of this,” Mr. Williams said during a May 6 virtual press conference.
