A veteran FDNY Emergency Medical Technician and mother of five was killed last week when she was run over with her own ambulance by a man who had commandeered it in the Morris Park section of The Bronx. EMT Yadira Arroyo, 44, had 14 years on the job.

On March 16 around 7 p.m., Ms. Arroyo and her partner Monique Williams, 31, were on the way to a call when they were alerted that someone was riding on the back of their ambulance, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters last week. When the two EMTs got out to survey the situation, Jose Gonzalez, 25, managed to slip into the driver’s seat after a struggle, and threw the rig into reverse, fatally hitting Ms. Arroyo. She was dragged for 15 feet as the suspect attempted to drive away before he lost control, jumping a curb and hitting a parked car.
