The threat by the head of the United Federation of Teachers to strike if schools open unsafely Sept. 10 was supported by rank-and-file members of the union, but they feared his warning has fallen on deaf ears.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew is demanding sufficient face masks, school nurses, contact tracing and intermittent monthly COVID testing for every school, warning that failure by the Department of Education to comply would provoke a strike or a lawsuit. The city's reopening plans will not require students to get tested before school starts.
