UFT, CSA Cautiously Optimistic About City Plans to Reopen Middle Schools

After Mayor de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced that middle schools would resume in-person learning Feb. 25, the United Federation of Teachers and the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators were cautiously optimistic that the situation room handling testing and tracing inside city schools would be able to handle the influx of staff and students.

About 62,000 middle-school students were expected to return to the classroom, based on the number of students who were enrolled in blended-learning during the fall. Middle schools have been closed since Nov. 19, when the city reached the 3-percent seven-day COVID positivity rate that triggered a shutdown at the time.
