The Sept. 20 derailing of an A Train, allegedly after a homeless man threw loose debris on the tracks shortly before a train pulled into the station, could have been a mass-casualty event and highlights the failure of the de Blasio administration to effectively deal with the homeless crisis, according to Tony Utano, president of Transport Workers Union Local 100.
"What happened last weekend could have killed a lot of people, including my members," he said during a phone interview. "That train hit almost six columns, ripped up 300 feet of third rail and destroyed components. We were lucky this time."
