Sanit Super, Probation Officer Deferral Deals

Unions representing Sanitation Department officers and Chiefs, as well as Probation Officers, have agreed to defer portions of back wages and/or benefit-fund contributions from the city in return for no-layoff clauses that will run at least through next April, Labor Commissioner Renee Campion disclosed Dec. 15.

Until now, unions delaying payments owed to their members did so in return for protection against layoffs at least through next June 30, when the current fiscal year ends. The United Probation Officers Association continued that trend, deferring $1.43 million in welfare-fund contributions for active and retired members and $370,000 in city annuity-fund contributions until the end of next year in return for a full no-layoff clause that could be extended through June 2022 if the city gets $5 billion in state and/or Federal relief.
