Rise in Gun Crimes Could Preface A Long, Bloody Summer in City

The rise in killings and shootings citywide since last year could be a preface to the bloodiest summer in decades.

Following an especially vicious Memorial Day weekend, with at least nine incidents just that Monday, May shootings climbed to 173, exactly 73 more than were recorded in May 2020. Through the first five months of the year, shootings were up nearly 80 percent.
