Meisha Ross Porter, who rose through the ranks of the city public-school system to become Chancellor following the abrupt resignation of Richard Carranza in March, announced Dec. 1 that she would be leaving at the end of the year to become head of a new nonprofit, the Bronx Community Foundation, which has pledged to advocate for "social, economic and racial justice" and access to quality education.
While Mayor-Elect Eric Adams has made no announcement yet, indications are that he plans to choose David Banks, the head of the Eagle Academy Foundation, to take charge of the public schools. Ms. Porter had worked for Mr. Banks earlier in her career and has described him as a mentor, but there was no indication that the two had spoken about whether she would be willing to stay on as a top-level aide if he succeeded her.
