Policing a Changed City, NYPD Adjusts to a Changed Mission

With a mandate to enforce social-distancing decrees along with their customary enforcement responsibilities, NYPD officers embarked on an entirely new policing mission starting in mid-March. 

Since neither city residents nor officials, including police, had experienced anything like the full-fledged epidemic that enveloped the city, it’s of little surprise that the department and its officers have encountered resistance when enforcing restrictions on public gatherings.
