Parents, Students Hold Rally to Keep School Safety Agents Under NYPD

“DOE stands for ‘dead on entry,’ because if we put these people in charge of our children’s safety, we’re going to have a lot of dead children upon entry,’ said School Safety Agent Quiann Simpkins, who June 6 joined parents and students rallying to keep the Agents under the jurisdiction of the Police Department.

Last summer, the City Council enacted a two-year plan to shift oversight of School Safety Agents from the NYPD to the Department of Education following calls for police-free schools after the death of George Floyd. The change would transform the role of School Safety Agents, requiring them to be retrained in restorative justice and de-escalation practices and barring them from making arrests.
