NYPD's Distancing Enforcement Invites Scrutiny, Call for Retreat

Of the alliances—political, social, commercial or otherwise—forged by the corona pandemic, none has been more atypical than that which brought together the city’s progressives and police unions, with both arguing that the NYPD should step back from enforcing social-distancing decrees. 

The cry from progressives, including several City Council Members and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, became more strident with the dissemination on social media of videos showing officers in violent confrontation with residents, as well as recent data showing that enforcement was taking place mostly within black and Latino neighborhoods—despite one study concluding that of the five precincts that received the most social-distancing complaints, four had majority white populations.
