MLC Leader: Sanitation Budget Cuts Will Add to Public-Health Worries

The chairman of the Municipal Labor Committee is warning that cuts that are likely under the new city budget could return New York to the lack of street cleanliness it struggled with in the 1970s, even as it wrestles with a health crisis created by the coronavirus.

Harry Nespoli, who is also president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association, said in a phone interview that even though there were no employee layoffs under the budget, it required service cuts for basics like trash pick-up.
