James McCarthy, who had been treasurer of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, Sept. 1 was elected its president, replacing the retiring Jake Lemonda.
A second-generation firefighter with nearly 33 years on the job, Lieutenant McCarthy has held union positions for the past 28 years, going back to his days as a delegate for the Uniformed Firefighters Association before his promotion to his current rank in 2009.
He joined the UFOA executive board in 2014, the same year Mr. Lemonda gained his first one-year term as president. Fire officers elect the board members, who in turn choose the president.
In a statement following his election, Mr. McCarthy said, "I am confident that my previous experience in union leadership has prepared me well for this position, and I look forward to the opportunity to fight, every day, for the needs of FDNY fire officers."
