The man who fatally beat his then-girlfriend’s son 6-year old Zymere Perkins in a 2016 case that sparked calls to reform the city’s child welfare system was sentenced May 17 to 25-years-to-life in prison.
Rysheim Smith was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-and second-degree manslaughter and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in January 2020. He was sentenced in Manhattan Supreme Court to 25-years-to-life on five counts, with the sentences running concurrently. His sentencing was originally scheduled for March but was delayed because of the pandemic.
