Judge Orders Mayor, O'Neill Testify In Inquiry on Eric Garner's Death

A State Supreme Court Justice has ruled that city officials, including Mayor de Blasio and former Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill, must testify about the circumstances surrounding the death of Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD in Staten Island more than six years ago. 

Justice Joan Madden’s Sept. 24 order, which determined that while Mr. Garner’s death, attributed by the Medical Examiner and then an NYPD Administrative Judge primarily to a chokehold deployed by Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo, “received considerable attention,” pertinent questions remain, including whether officers were justified in arresting Mr. Garner.
